On May 14, Michelin introduced its respected restaurant guide to Mexico for the first time. Restaurants located in Baja California, Quintana Roo, Mexico City, Oaxaca, Los Cabos, and Nuevo Léon were given their first stars during a ceremony in Mexico City. In the initial guide, 16 eateries received a one-star rating, while two received two stars.

Pujol, the famous Mexico City spot, was one of this year’s winners. A sampling menu of Mexican dishes has been reimagined at the eatery. Even though Enrique Olvera owns several well-known restaurants, including Cosme and Atla, this was his first win. Jorge Vallejo’s Quintonil in Mexico City features clever dishes made with ingredients native to Mexico.

Since 2022, the guide has added Mexico to its list of countries. Though Michelin has moved to expand its coverage to new areas, Mexico has, until now, been passed over despite emerging as a culinary leader on the world stage.

Mexico’s first starred restaurants were added to the Michelin Bib Gourmand list, a category dedicated to comparatively inexpensive restaurants. 42 restaurants were added to the list. Additionally, numerous chefs were awarded special awards. Marcelo Hisaki and Reyna Venegas of Restaurante Amores in Tecate, Mexico, received the service award. Lauren Plascencia was awarded the sommelier award for her work at the French-inflected Animálon restaurant in Valle de Guadalupe. Six green stars are given to restaurants that use sustainable and ethical practices.
